6 trends driving digitalization in the manufacturing industry

Manufacturing leaders face a hard question. Out of all the digitalization trends out there, which ones will actually move the business, and which will just add another disconnected system to babysit?

The answer comes down to your information. Every part, batch and approval depends on a document, and that paperwork sits across the ERP, PLM, CAD and quality systems, with no single place holding the full picture. Approvals take weeks to route, audits mean digging through years of records, and AI software stalls because off-the-shelf AI software like a chatbot can't securely reach your company content, nor should it.

The trends that matter are the ones that fix this. Here are six you should be paying attention to.

1. Supply chain resilience through connected information

Disruption isn't the exception anymore. When the International Longshoremen's Association walked out in October 2024, JPMorgan analysts pegged the potential hit to the US economy at as much as $5 billion a day. The New York Fed's Global Supply Chain Pressure Index climbed 1.3 points in the two months after the Strait of Hormuz conflict began, putting it 1.8 standard deviations above its long-run average.

Disruption on that scale reaches individual manufacturers as smaller, everyday problems. A shipment doesn't show up, or a supplier fails an audit, and the companies that recover fastest are the ones who can see the whole picture and reroute quickly. That speed comes down to supplier information you can reach in a usable form, right where the work happens, whatever system you're in. This includes:

  • Supplier certificates, contracts, and performance data connected, current, and instantly accessible in the systems your teams already use
  • Late deliveries and shipments that arrive short flagged automatically, the moment they happen

2. Making compliance part of how documents are managed

Compliance has become one of the biggest reasons manufacturers are finally modernizing how they manage information, whether that pressure comes from ISO 9001, customer-specific requirements, FDA and other regulatory obligations, sustainability reporting or product liability. What they all have in common is a demand for documentation that's complete, current and provable on demand. Duravit, the bathroom manufacturer, hit that point when its old archive stopped keeping up with the volume of documents coming in, and it migrated around 20 million of them into audit-proof storage without pausing operations.

When your quality records are spread across disconnected systems, proving conformity turns into a manual scramble that can eat up days. If the controls are built into how documents are stored in the first place, that work is already done:

  • Version control, so there's never a question of which revision was approved
  • Retention rules and audit trails applied automatically, not tracked by hand
  • Encrypted content and role-based access protecting the records you rely on

3. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and machine data

The Industrial Internet of Things links the machines, sensors and embedded systems on the floor with the applications that run the business, like your ERP, PLM and order management software. So a press reports its own cycle times, a CNC machine flags a tool nearing end of life, and a sensor on a bearing logs a temperature climbing outside tolerance. Done well, maintenance gets scheduled before a failure instead of after one, and the process data feeds back into how the next run is set up.

The problem is that most of this data never leaves the machine that produced it, or it lands in a system nobody outside engineering can query. It only becomes useful when it's connected to the documents that give it meaning, so the sensor log sits alongside the maintenance record, the batch data sits alongside the certificate of analysis, and the deviation sits alongside the approved drawing revision it relates to.

That connection is what makes the data usable when it matters. A customer calls about a failed part from a batch shipped eight months ago, and quality can pull the machine readings from that shift, the batch record, the inspection results and the drawing revision in force at the time, then answer the question the same day rather than opening a two-week investigation.

Everything relating to a given production run now sits in one searchable file rather than scattered across separate systems, so process engineering can pull up the full picture without knowing where each piece was filed.

4. AI: From tired buzzword to being actually useful

AI has arrived on the shop floor, and manufacturers are betting on it. Deloitte's 2025 Smart Manufacturing survey found that 92% of manufacturers see smart manufacturing as a primary driver of competitiveness over the next three years. The value isn't in general-purpose chatbots, though. It's in trusted enterprise AI put to work on real manufacturing jobs, such as:

  • Quality control: AI analyzes production data to catch errors and deviations early, and generate reports that meet documentation requirements.
  • Supply chain: automating order-entry and invoicing, delivering a 360° view of suppliers, and making collaboration easier.
  • Risk management: streamlining supplier assessments, as long as the information sits in an electronic supplier file the AI can actually read.
  • Inventory: connecting warehouse data with finance to automate the whole purchase-to-pay process.
